Carl McCarthy

Carol McCarthyCarl McCarthy, an American, is a corporate attorney focusing on cross-border financial transactions. He is a partner in the international law firm of Herzfeld & Rubin, based in New York.

He practiced for many years in London and has worked on transactions in over twenty countries, including most of the member states of the European Union. He is increasingly interested in the Middle East, especially Syria.

He also advises non-profit organizations, such as Yenza, Inc., a US-South African enterprise that works to educate young people about the legacy of apartheid.

Carl holds a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and an undergraduate degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

He began his legal career in the European offices of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where he practiced for five years in London and Frankfurt. Prior to entering private practice, Carl clerked for the Hon. Jerome Farris of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle.

Carl finds mentoring to be a very rewarding experience.He has acted as mentor in many formal and informal capacities, including formally at his previous law firm, where he was assigned junior lawyer mentees.

He join a group of mentors in Syria since he is interested in learning about Syria and its people first-hand, mainly as a result of his recent involvement and project there.
