According to the dictionary definition, an entrepreneur is a someone who organises and manages any enterprise, particularly a business, and who (as a result) usually needs considerable initiative and is not risk averse. However, that is not the whole story, because in most cases entrepreneurs don’t just organise and manage, they usually own or lead the business in question.
There are many different types of entrepreneur:
- Social entrepreneur – these are the people that want to change the world for the better
- Life-style entrepreneur – these are people who start a business to fit in with a lifestyle
- Solopreneur – these are often the consultants, trainers who are happy working for themselves
- Serial entrepreneur – these people love starting up and then moving on
- High growth entrepreneur – these people are in it for the long haul and want to create an empire.
What sort of entrepreneur are YOU?

Yay, I think I may be an entrepreneur?!!! Must be a mix between ‘Social’ as I want to change the world for the better (started Compassionate Dorset – http://www.compassionatedorset.co.uk last year just for starters!) and ‘Life-style’ / ‘Solo’ as I have to work with people but am a Freelance Web Designer so really kind of like working by myself in my home office! : )
I think that pretty much defines you as a social entrepreneur Anna.
Welcome to our ranks.
i believe i am Social entrepreneur, but i believe my long term plans is to be a serial entrepreneur. does this sound right?
I don’t see why not Muneer, perhaps you could be a serial social entrepreneur
Hello Linda and thank you for sharing this topic.
I might not totally agree with the dictionary definition, I believe that an entrepreneur is a person who pursues opportunities without regard to the resources she/he currently control.
The word was originally used to describe people who “take on the risk” between buyers and sellers or “undertake” a task such as starting a new venture. But I also think that the idea is the keyword, without the idea and the opportunity the entrepreneurial process doesn’t exist. We also now hear the term corporate entrepreneurship (CE)or entrepreneurial organizations that are adopting entrepreneurial activities and build an entrepreneurial culture.
Thanks,
That’s very true Suleiman, the meaning of the word has become broader in recent years as the qualities, skills and attributes of entrepreneurs are recognised as being valuable in almost any work environment.
